Coquillard is a traditional school designed to provide students the opportunity for academic, social and emotional growth in a highly structured, back-to-basics environment. The school places a strong emphasis on high academic standards, student responsibility, and active parental involvement. Transportation is provided to all students who live outside the walk area for the school.

Coquillard School first opened in 1957. The school was named after Alexis Coquillard, generally regarded as the founder of the city of South Bend. Mr. Coquillard was born in Detroit in 1795. He served in the American forces during the War of 1812 under the leadership of William Henry Harrison. After the war he returned to the St. Joseph Valley where he became an employee of John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company. In 1842 Father Edward Sorin, C.S.C. traveled to his friend Alexis Coquillard's home on his way to the future home of the University of Notre Dame.
